Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a cosmetic treatment for unwanted veins that reside near the surface of your skin. The procedure involves an injection of a chemical sclerosant into the targeted vein, which causes the vein to collapse, close and disappear from the surface of the skin.

Board Certified Dr. Jon Sattler offers sclerotherapy for his patients in Glendora and along the I-210 corridor from Pasadena to Rancho Cucamonga. He also has several other non-surgical treatments that improve the appearance of your skin.

Who Can Undergo Sclerotherapy?

Your plastic surgeon may recommend sclerotherapy for unwanted spider veins or varicose veins. These venous malformations often occur as a result of hormonal changes, weight fluctuations, prolonged sitting or standing and some medications. Unsightly veins may also be a hereditary condition to which you are predisposed.

Schedule a consultation with Dr. Sattler in Glendora to find out if you are a suitable candidate for sclerotherapy.

What Happens During Sclerotherapy?

Before treatment, the doctor examines the veins and areas of concern. He may ask you about symptoms related to the appearance of the vein and perform a check for venous reflux disease (abnormal blood circulation).

Sclerotherapy is an outpatient procedure that involves injections of a sclerosing agent into the unwanted vein. The skin is cleansed with antiseptic and Dr. Sattler performs the injections. A single injection may be necessary for every inch of vein. Treatments vary from 5 up to 40 injections. After the injection(s) the area is usually wrapped in compression tape and cotton balls are applied.

Before and After Sclerotherapy

After the procedure, Dr. Sattler or one of our staff members will provide you with post-operative instructions to follow. These instructions may include steps on managing your activity level and wearing compression hose for 72 hours or longer. You may feel some cramping and see some redness and bruising occur in the treated areas.

Dr. Sattler may recommend that you undergo two or more sclerotherapy sessions at monthly intervals for best results. Sclerotherapy does not prevent veins from appearing in the future.
